Resources
Not sure where to start? Begin with any of these items below.
Support your local ecosystem.
- Remove all invasive species on your property. Encourage neighbors and the city to do so as well.
- Plant native plants.
- Reduce your turf as much as possible and replace it with ecologically beneficial and native plants.
- Eliminate use of pesticides.
Help conserve water.
- Reduce water usage by repairing leaks, installing low flow fixtures and using less water with daily tasks (shorter showers.)
- Keep storm drains clear of contaminants. Only rain down the storm drain.
- Reduce use of pesticides and fertilizers, pick up dog poop and absorb water runoff with gardens to minimize your stormwater pollution.
Consume less.
- Think twice before shopping.
- Use and reuse (and then reuse again) what you have first.
- Consider slow fashion and second hand items.
- Shop local.
Reduce your waste.
- Assess what is going into your trash regularly.
- Recycle items that your local recycling facility accepts.
- Compost! It takes practice, but will become second nature.
- Use reusable items (cloth napkins and dish towels, reusable water bottles) and items with less packaging waste (bar soap and solid shampoo.)
Use your voice and your vote.
- Register to vote and hold your elected officials accountable for environmental considerations.
- Ask your schools and city to compost, eliminate pesticide usage, and transition to clean energy.
- Ask your favorite restaurants to reduce their waste by replacing single-use plastic containers with reusables (it is more cost effective than one might assume.)
- Talk to your children, family, friends, and neighbors. Discuss why environmental action is important. Learn together. Create an action item with them that fits into
your life.
Switch to clean energy.
- Make a plan to transition your home away from gas and toward electric options (furnace, water heater, dryer, appliances, lawn care equipment) before you have to replace that broken appliance.
- Consider renewable energy sources such as installation of solar panels or joining the City’s electrical aggregation program.
- Walk, bike, use public transportation or use an electric vehicle.
